I Joined the Navy In May 1943, from Hartford,Connecticut. Went through BOOTS there and then EM school. Came out EM3, But before being transferred, became AE3. I thought I was being schooled for Subs and ended up in aviation. I think they took the top 3 in the class and sent us to Norfolk Naval Airstation. I remember Sampson, well, and hold her dear. I sailed the whaleboats there. I would like to join an organization.

Both my parents were vets of Sampson. My father, Y2c Howard Newell Carter (aka Nick) attended Class B Stenographers School, USNTC Sampson 05 Dec 44 - 19 Jan 45, then cruised the Pacific to Japan on the USNHS Rescue (AH-18) as yeoman to Capt Robert Twining (brother to Generals Nathan (USAAF) and Merrill (USMC) Twining) til October 1945. Dad ended his 6 year hitch as Y1c at Philadelphia Navy Yard on the USS Montpelier (CL-57) in April 1947. My mother, Rose E. Logue, attended Navy Nurse O.T.S. from April to October 1945. Her class was never commissioned due to the end of WWII, so she returned to NJ to be part of the post-war Baby Boomers. Dad died in Dec 1978, and Mom lives in Florida. I have a picture of my mother's nursing class at graduation, but none of my father's class (of 22 yeomen).

Went thru boots starting October 1943. I was in "G" unit in the choir company. Company 551. It was a cold and windy winter. We were on the second floor which was a little warmer. I kinda enjoyed "fire watch" because I could curl up by the furnace. Had my General orders memorized so was not afraid of roaming officers. Went to radio school at Bedford Springs, Pennsylvania and then submarine school in New London, Connecticut. Ended up making three war patrols on the USS Tilefish SS307. Got out of the Navy October 1947 as a Radioman second class. Sure glad I found this site. Brings back memories. I wonder if any of my Boot shipmates will read this note? I wonder if anyone remembers the outbreak of "Cat Fever" Sure would like to hear from some fellow boots. Ted Kaszuba ( tskaszuba01@snet.net )

RID March 1946 at Great Lakes NTC. Graduated U. S. Naval Academy Jun 1950 and Commissioned Ensign. Served until retirement Aug 1975. Commanded three ships, one of which won the Marjorie Sterrett Battleship Award during my tenure, and one Foreign Shore unit. Participated in Operation "IVY" and witnessed first hydrogen bomb test at Eniwetok Lagoon 1952. Designated as Eniwetok Lagoon Pilot. Commanded a DD that obtained contact and eventually surfaced a Soviet "Whiskey" class submarine in Mediterranean during late 1960's. After retirement from Active Duty, supported Naval Mine Countermeasures development of the Avenger Class Mine Countermeasures Ship(MCM)as a contractor to the Naval Sea Systems Command. Retired a second time in 1993. I guess the Navy really did have those square Blue and Gold needles that they used for innoculating farm boys at Sampson!
