Nice web site! I finally went to Sampson State Park 1 year ago with my Dad, who did his boot camp there. He had talked about it, this was his first time back. As a Park Ranger, I wanted to see the park, but also learn about my Dads' time there. He told me about loading munitions at the Army depot and marching. He also remembered the brig, which he worked at before being shipped out.He was on an LST at Normandy, and finally retired in 1966, after 21yrs. On the trip to the park we learned about the reunion, but it was too late for last year. We are coming this year, with camera in tow. I look forward to seeing the museum and hearing the stories of WWII for the Ole Salts and my Dad.

My Dad , Robert O Holley was drafted into the USN at at 31 years of age, He entered Sampson then went to Little Creek for amphibious training. He spent all of his time on board USS LSM 230. He was older than the skipper. I know very little about his service time because it was not a subject to be talked about at home. I have found out more about my Dad from his shipmates and am very proud of him. Dad died in 1974. Thanks for the great website Frederick R. Holley Webster NY

My first duty for the Navy was a bus ride to Sampson for "boot training" and they did a great job in "cranking up" we 18 year olds for the chore that we had to do. Two months at Iowa State College for GM engine wisdom and off to Treasure Island, Cal. to catch my ship--the L.C.I. m (mortar)#362. She had done one invasion and did eight more after I came aboard--Lingayen Gulf, Mindoro, Moratai, Palawan, Zamboanga, Sanga Sanga, Tarakan Is. D-4 and again on D Day! Ultimate conclusion--Sampson makes great men even Greater!!!

George C. Weisert Wednesday, 7/26/00, 5:40 PM

I joined the USNR and was immediately sent to Sampson for boot training. My service was from March 4, 1943 to March 16, 1946. During the introductory physical at Sampson, a doctor, with a magic marker, wrote, in large letters, HO on my chest. That meant 'holdover' because of a potential medical problem - heart. They gave me my civilian clothes back and sent me to a special barracks (L16?). I waited several weeks for a fluoroscope of my chest while swallowing liquid plaster. I did it on the first try because they told me if I didn't do it the first time, I'd be there all day. I guess the Navy calls that 'encouragement'. I passed and was assigned to a company in a few days. Thus started my Navy career.

Enjoyed the memories. I was at Sampson in Nov. '42 when we stepped off the train into a sea of mud. My mother wanted to know where I had gone when she received the box of mud-soaked clothes. I volunteered for the Armed Guard and recently joined that organization veterans - went to Kentucky earlier this year for the annual reunion and enjoyed seeing two of my mates who were on the Mermansk run with me 55 years ago on the Hawkins Fudske.
