October 27, 2000 Hi Shipmates from Sampson, Tis my first time on the internet, so please bear with me. Last May my bride and I attended a ship's reunion in Corning, Ny.Y. I had joined the Sampson's vets a couple of years ago and finally found out where the Sampson was and here was my chance to finally visit some of the most memorable days of my life, good and bad. I went up there and unfortunately the Brig was closed and wouldn't be open for a couple of weeks. I couldn't believe what I saw. In place of a mid size city there was just open fields and only the Brig was left standing. It sure was a shock. Where did all those grinders and drill halls go? I was a seventeen year old raw recruit from Williamstown, Mass. when I got there in Oct. 44 in the middle of the night. I went thru the usual indoctrination of run to medical, run to be outfitted, run to the barracks amid the shouts of "Drag the fart sack" (some nuts did), "you'll be sorry" (for a couple of days I was). Then it was run tothe chow hall where of course we waited, and then the final indignity run to the barber. It all happened so fast, it was like a blur. I was assigned to Co. 183 for the next twelve weeks with a complement of 45% Bostonians and 45% New York City. That was an experience for this hick in itself. I was in OGU some time in Dec44 when they had this teriffic snowstorm. I was dumped out of my rack and sent to Rochester in the middle of the night by train to shovel snow for the New York Central. Anyone else remember that deal? I returned to OGU by train at night and later shipped to EM school in Detroit, Michigan. Naturally at night. Did they ever run trains there during the day? That is why I never could figure out exactly where Sampson was. WE pulled a six hour liberty in Geneva but it might as well have been in Timbuctu. After the war, I reenlisted and over the next 22 years I served on five destroyers, two tankers and a transport and retired in 1966 as EMC. WEnt to work for Pabst Brewing Co. Milwaukee, WI as an electrician and retired from Pabst in 1988. Married and have four sons, five grandchildren. Keep up the good work gang. Would have loved to visit the Brig when it was open. Now I have to try to make a reunion, but time marches on.

PLEASE READ >>> My grandfather went to Sampson for boot camp. His name is BILL CHEESMAN. He served on the USS Alabama. Does anyone remember him? Please e-mail me. Also, I am looking for a special Christmas gift for him this year. I would like it to be related to his naval experience. If you have any ideas please send them to me. I can look at antique stores or on Ebay for older artifacts. Perhaps there is something new out there now that would make a nice gift for a veteran of WWII. Last year I wrote him a poem that I framed with his naval picture. I have his metals and war diary that I display proudly in our living room for all to enjoy. Thank you to all the vets! We appreciate you!! Christine

I just visited your museum today and loved it. It's really a "people friendly" place that tells quite a story. What are the chances of putting the entire roster of all the people who went through Sampson on your web site? (A large task, I must admit!) It would be fun to search for friends and relatives. Keep up the good work.

Should have entered in my previous comments, that I was in Dewey unit, Co.267. Our Co. Commander was a Spec.3 named Mr."Red" Howting. We were just finishing "Boots" when VJ day came. After boots, went to San Diego to Radar Op. school, then to a short tour of duty aboard the Harry E Hubbard DD 748. The next couple of years were spent aboard the USS Sailish, ATA 187. Good duty! Took part in "Operation Crossroads", Atomic Bomb tests in the Pacific the summer of 46.

This is my first time visiting the sight. I thought it was very interesting and educational. Pretty funny stories too! My grandfather is Bill Grower so I get to keep up to date on almost all the goings on from him. My grandmother, Arline Grower, shows me all the pictures she takes while there. I plan on visiting the museum in person next year as it is the only way I get to see my grandparents during the summer! I'm always expecting a ransom note to come on Sampson letter head! Great job on the web site and at the museum. You are great role models for my generation. Keep up the good work!
